MO-09: Baker is Pro-Choice and a Baptist?

Judy Baker is amazing, she's running for Congress in Missouri, and she's pro-choice. This is a very normal situation, but you know what isn't, she claims to be a baptist. (She went to seminary when she was a young woman.) Her husband is John, he's the Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Columbia, MO.

First Baptist has a grand heritage of ministry in Columbia. Organized in 1823 as the very first church in Columbia, we are also one of the oldest continuing Baptist churches in Missouri. While we are a people open to the larger Christian community, we especially seek to express in our worship and ministry the Baptist Identity in all its diversity. We are affiliated with the American Baptist Churches-USA, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, and the Alliance of Baptists.

Interesting that the American Baptist Churches-USA feels that:

As American Baptists we oppose abortion,

  • as a means of avoiding responsibility for conception,
  • as a primary means of birth control,
  • without regard for the far-reaching consequences of the act.

Then the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship has this to say:

As Baptist Christians, we believe that the foundation of a Christian sexual
ethic is faithfulness in marriage between a man and a woman and celibacy in singleness.

Because of this organizational value, the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship does
not allow for the expenditure of funds for organizations or causes that condone,
advocate or affirm homosexual practice. Neither does this CBF organizational
value allow for the purposeful hiring of a staff person or the sending of a
missionary who is a practicing homosexual.

So if this is what her church believes, then why does the Kos support her? And what business does she have being Pro-Choice in the first place? Nothing like turning your back on your faith for political gain., well, if Obama can do it.
